Today, this entire property has disappeared due to the ever caving banks of the river and changing of the river bed. In later years, he lived on a plantation oppostie Bayou Sara, Louisiana on the Mississippi River where he built a two-story brick house. He was very active in politics, serving as deputy sheriff, Sheriff Representative, and Senator for Pointe Coupee parish over a period of years. He was asked to be a candidate for Governor of Louisiana, but was forced to decline the honor due to ill health. He suffered a great deal from rheumatism, which rendered him almost helpless during his last years. He also became blind during the last year of his life. His home burned, destroying one of the finest libraries in the South, as well as many valuable documents and records."
