Pastor of the church of Baton Rouge with consent, and in presence of the Pastor
of the par. of Pointe Coupee, having previously received from the M.G....? vicar
General of the diocese a dispensation for the impediment of consanguinity in
second grade having also dispensed with two of the usual publications, did join
together as husband and wife, Stephen Van Wickle Esq., son of Jacob Van Wickle
and Sarah Morgan, of the State of New Jersey, on the one side...and Miss Adelle
Morgan, daughter of Col. Charles Morgan and Hyacinthe Allain, a native of this
par. on the other side. The parties being provided with a license of the par.
-Judge, signed F. Dorannon?, under this day date, have given their mutual
consent for marriage, in presence of MM. Sot. Allain, Octave LeBlanc, Augustine

"One of Stephen Van Wickle's first homes was Hermitage Plantation
on the Mississippi River where he maintained a steamboat landing. Today, this
entire property has disappeared due to the ever caving banks of the river and
changing of the river bed. In later years, he lived on a plantation oppostie
Bayou Sara, Louisiana on the Mississippi River where he built a two-story brick
house. He was very active in politics, serving as deputy sheriff, Sheriff
Representative, and Senator for Pointe Coupee parish over a period of years. He
was asked to be a candidate for Governor of Louisiana, but was forced to decline
the honor due to ill health. He suffered a great deal from rheumatism, which
rendered him almost helpless during his last years. He also became blind during
the last year of his life. His home burned, destroying one of the finest
libraries in the South, as well as many valuable documents and records."
Adele Morgan is the daughter of Col. Charles Morgan (b. abt 1775 in Monmouth Co., NJ, d. 17 February 1848 in Pointe
Coupee par., LA) and Hyacinthe Allain (b. 9 January 1784 in Pointe Coupe par., LA and d. 11 May 1874 in New Roads, Pointe
Coupee par., LA). Adele d. near Pointe Coupee par., LA on 7 May 1839 at age 29. She was bur. in Episc. Cem., St.
Francisville, W. Feliciana par., LA. Stephen and his wife, Adele, were first cousins.

m. abt 1854 to Thomas W. Compton (b. 1821, Maryland and d. after 1875). (Note: Dr. Thomas Compton married first to Amanda

Winsboro, South Carolina who died September 15, 1915" James Hugh Aiken was the great, great grandson of Judge Jacob
Van Wickle of Middlesex County, NJ and the great great great grandson of Captain James Morgan of Middlesex County, NJ.

A. Van Doren Honeyman, Joannes Nevius and his descendents, 1900, p. 187 says Col. Stephen Van Wickle was living 1841 and
1849 at Waterloo P.O. in Pte. Coupee Parish, LA, 150 miles north of New Orleans. Abraham Van Doren Nevius of N.J. b. 1807
a merchant NY and NB and St. Louis came 1841 N.O. and subsequently to live (board) with Stephen Van Wickle and died in
his home January 1849 of Asiatic Cholera.
La. Genealogy Regr. 15 (1968) 119 - Funeral records of St. Joseph Cathedral, Baton Rouge, shows 1833, Van Wickle, Stephen,
son of the Sheriff of Pte. Coupee, abt. 2 (may be Jacob Charles' son but doubtful he was married then?)
In 1830 the legislature
granted Stephen Vanwickle and his heirs the privilege of operating a ferry
across the Mississippi from Bayou Sara to Pointe Coupee for ten years. It was to
be in operation by January 1833 and could be propelled by steam or horse power.
The ferry should be able to accommodate two four-wheel carriages, six horses and
a cabin capable of transporting 12 passengers. Compensation for the crossing
was: for every loaded wagon & team - $1.50, for every empty wagon, $1.00, for
every loaded cart, $1.00, for every empty cart, .37 1/2, for every gig & horse,
$1.00, for every four wheel carriage and two horses, $2.00, for every man &
horse, .75, for every single foot passenger, .25, for every head of horned
cattle, .37 1/2, for every head of sheep or hogs, .18 3/4, for every mule &

- Stephen Van Wickle died at his home, "The Hermitage" in
Pointe Coupee parish, La. It was on the west side of the Mississippi River
opposite the now washed away town of Bayou Sara, near what is today the
intersection of Routes 415 and 416. Tombstone at Grace Episcopal cem., St.
Francisville, W. Feliciana par., La (the nearest Episcopal Church, across the
Mississippi and northeast from his home).
